If it is your own property

In many states the property can be redeemed by paying what is owed — in some states even after a sale — and payment plans may be available. The rules and the deadlines are set by statute and they are short: consult the statute and the county office named here about where you actually stand.

The sale, stage by stage

Tax-defaulted property sale

California statute authorizes the county tax collector to sell tax-defaulted property itself at public auction once the statutory default period has run (Rev. & Tax. Code §§ 3691, 3692). An owner’s right to redeem typically ends as the sale begins (§ 3707) — which is why acting before the sale matters most.
